A Retrospective One-Year Study of Hormone Replacement Therapy on Lipid Profile in Postmenopausal Women

Abstract
Estrogen treatment in postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy is known to decrease the incidence of cardiovascular disease. Progestin, however, may reduce or eliminate these beneficial effects of estrogen. This study intends to 1) evaluate the
effect
of estrogen with or without progestins on lipid profiles in blood of postmenoposal women, and 2) evaluate the nutritional status of postmemoposal women through their dietary assessment. In this retrospective study, 8 women composed the control
group,
and 24 women received conjugated equine estrogen(premarin, 0.625mg/day) with or without medroxy progesterone acetate(provera, 5.0mg for 13 days or 2.5mg for 30 days). As a result, all groups of hormone-treated women increased the triglyceride
levels(18.5%) which did not significantly difference between groups. Contrary to most previous studies, only the estrogen groups showed a slight decreased in HDL cholesterol, whereas the control group and the estrogen with progesterone group
increased
in HDL level(9%). This study confinmed the results of other studies showing that significantly decreases LDL cholesterol level when taken wit or without progesteron. The average intakes of calories and calcium in postminoposal women were not
sufficient
for all of the subjects. Intakes of cholesterol, SFA, MUFA, and PUFA did not significantly differ among the four groups. Further studies with more subjects are required to elucidate the effect of hormone replacement therapy on the blood lipid
profiles.
